BIOGRAPHY

 

W. Stephen Cooper, a Toronto native, received his initial training in photography at Humber College. Since graduating, Steve has been involved in many areas of visual media, including film and video production. His photographs have appeared in many Canadian publications, including The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, Photo Life Magazine, Canadian Yachting, Wildflower Magazine, Avenue Magazine, and on the covers of many academic laboratory manuals and scientific journals. “Petroglyph”, an American literary journal, featured a portfolio of Steve’s images. They have also been featured in the books "On the Shuttle" (by Barbara Bondar), “The Healing Heart” (by Eleanor Koldofsky), "The Gristmill" (by Bobbie Kalman), and “Kommos” (Shaw and Shaw). In 1988, he was the photographer and principal author of the book "Watermills of Ontario, Quebec and Maritime Canada" (McGraw-Hill Ryerson Canada Ltd.). Canadian musician Rick Whitelaw chose one of Steve’s Temagami Wilderness images for the cover of his recent album; “Polishing the Stone”. He is also a member of The Archaeological Conservancy and Visual Arts Ontario.


Steve has also photographed a diverse group of celebrities including Astronaut Roberta Bondar, actor Tony Curtis, physicist Stephen Hawking, and auto racing legend Sterling Moss.


Steve's photographs have been exhibited regularly at the University of Toronto. His images have also been shown at Gallery June, Queen’s Quay Terminal, (at Toronto’s Harbourfront), “The Works”, (Arts Etobicoke), the Ontario Science Centre, and at Toronto’s Prisma Gallery. He has participated regularly in the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition since 1994. In 1997, and again in 1999, collections of his images were on display at Toronto’s Scaramouche Restaurant. In September, 1997, Steve was one of twenty-two international wilderness artists invited to Temagami, Ontario, to participate in “The Temagami Twenty-Two”. The purpose of this gathering was to focus public attention on the endangered old growth forest of the region by producing works of art for exhibitions and an auction. In June, 1998, his images of the Temagami wilderness were displayed at The Arts and Letters Club in Toronto. In February, 2001, The Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust held a fund-raising art auction at the A-Space Gallery in Toronto. Steve was one of the artists asked to participate in this important cause. In May, 2001, his “Canyonlands Architects” photographs were featured as part of the Contact Photography Festival in Toronto. In November, 2005, he participated in a group exhibition; “Dexteritas”, in Toronto’s historic Distillery District. For the last two years, Steve has participated in the Roncesvalles Village Studio Tour. In April, 2007, he was part of a two-man exhibition at Context Gallery entitled: “Two visions of the Land”.Several of his images were displayed at Bloom restaurant in Bloor West Village from April 2007 to April 2008. In May, 2007, He showed his work at the Lake Scugog Studio Tour, and participated in a group exhibition of photographers at Praxis Gallery during Contact. In July 2007, he was part of the Port Credit Outdoor Art Show. In September 2007 he participated in the Junction Arts Festival. In March, 2008, he was one of three hundred professional artists at The Toronto Art Expo, held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. From May until July, 2008, many of his images are on display at the Paula White-Diamond Gallery in St. Jacobs, Ontario. July 18 to 20, 2008, he will be at the Muskoka Arts and Crafts Show in Bracebridge, Ontario. His work may also be found in private and corporate collections internationally.
