BIOGRAPHY

W. Stephen Cooper, a Toronto native, received his initial training in photography at Humber College. Since graduating, Steve has been involved in many areas of visual media, including film and video production. His photographs have appeared in many Canadian publications, including The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, Toronto Life Magazine, Photo Life Magazine, Canadian Yachting, Wildflower Magazine, Avenue Magazine, and on the covers of many academic laboratory manuals and scientific journals. "Petroglyph", an American literary journal, has featured a portfolio of Steve's images. They have also been featured in the books "On the Shuttle" (by Barbara Bondar), "The Healing Heart" (by Eleanor Koldofsky), "The Gristmill" (by Bobbie Kalman), and "Kommos" (Shaw and Shaw). He was the photographer and principal author of the book "Watermills of Ontario, Quebec and Maritime Canada" (McGraw-Hill Ryerson Canada Ltd.). Canadian musician Rick Whitelaw chose one of Steve's Temagami Wilderness images for the cover of his album; "Polishing the Stone". He is also a member of The Archaeological Conservancy and Visual Arts Ontario.

Steve has also photographed a diverse group of celebrities including Astronaut Roberta Bondar, actor Tony Curtis, physicist Stephen Hawking, and auto racing legend Sterling Moss.

Steve's photographs have been exhibited regularly at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, the Toronto Art Expo, the Junction Arts Festival, and the Roncesvalles Village Studio Tour. In September, 2009, Steve's photograph "Westwater Aftermath, The Dance" earned second place in the juried art portion of the Junction Arts Festival.

His images have also been shown in Toronto at the Arts and Letters Club, Arts Etobicoke, Bloom Restaurant, Contact Photography Festival, Gallery June, the Historic Distillery District, (Dexteritus Art Show), The Ontario Science Centre, Praxis Gallery, Prisma Gallery, Queen's Quay Terminal at Harbourfront, Scaramouche Restaurant, The University of Toronto and Urbanscape Gallery. In April, 2007, he was part of a two-man exhibition at Context Gallery entitled "Two Visions of the Land". His work may also be found in private and corporate collections internationally.

Steve's images have been used to help worthy causes, as well. Steve was one of twenty-two international wilderness artists invited to Temagami, Ontario, to create art of the region that would help focus public attention on the endangered old growth forest. "The Temagami Twenty-Two", as the group became known, produced works of art for exhibitions and an auction. The Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust was formed to preserve an important water source and habitat for a wide variety of rare flora and fauna. Steve was one of the group of artists asked to participate in a fund-raising auction at the A-Space Gallery in Toronto.
